How to Adjust Garter Belts and Stockings

Thigh-high stockings with reinforced tops can be used with garter belts.

Garter belts with stockings were once a practical alternative to the restrictive girdle. When pantyhose hit the consumer market in 1959, many prior garter belt wearers switched to the new hosiery. However, garter belts and thigh-high stockings remain marketable due to their functionality and their bonus attribute of sauciness. An improperly adjusted garter belt quickly loses both elements.

Instructions

1. Hold the garter belt with both hands in front of you. Position the garter belt so that the back of the piece is directly in front of you.
2. Lower a step-in garter belt close to the ground and place both feet into the center. Shimmy the garter belt up your body until it rests naturally over your lower abdomen and hips. If your garter belt has hook-and-eye closures, slip the hooks from the eyes, wrap the belt around your abdomen, and hook the closures back together.
3. Turn the belt until the front side is flush with your abdomen and the front straps hang down around the middle front part of your thighs.
4. Adjust the garter straps by sliding the strap adjusters up toward the belt for a tighter fit, or by sliding the adjusters down toward the garter grips for a looser fit.
5. Unsnap each garter grip by pushing the button tab on the underside out of the tab holder.
6. Pick up one of the stockings and gather the top part down to the toe area. Insert your foot into the foot area and slowly stretch the stocking up your ankle, calf and thigh.
7. Pick up the second stocking and repeat the process to put it on your other leg.
8. Untwist the garter ribbon and situate the top edge of the thigh-high stocking in between the two parts of an opened garter grip.
9. Close the grip by pushing the tab and stocking into the grip holder. Repeat for all the garter grips on this leg.
10. Attach the front and back garter grips to the stocking on the other leg in the same way.
11. Tug on each grip lightly to ensure that the stocking is securely locked.
12. Tighten the garter straps if the stocking feels too loose. Slowly pull the stocking upward, starting at the feet. Work your way up the stocking by gently pulling the stocking up with small tugs. This will create extra slack at the top of the stocking. Slide the front and back strap adjusters up until you get the desired fit. Smooth out the entire stocking.
13. Loosen the garter straps if the stocking feels too tight. Slide the front and back strap adjusters downward in small movements. Smooth out the entire stocking for a proper fit. Repeat sliding and smoothing until the stocking fits properly.

    Examine the fit of the garter belt and stocking on the other leg. Repeat the process of tightening or loosening as necessary.

Are Garters Making a Fashion Comeback?

We all know that fashion goes in a circle, with 1980’s fashion being popular now, but who would have guessed this next comeback: garters. When I think about garters, I think about the traditional lace garter worn by brides, or pin up girls.

Garters have been making there comeback lately, appearing on runways, stage performances and even on the street. Once a traditional belt restricted to functional purposes, garters are now bringing a new flirty edge to lingerie and ready to wear fashion. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured garters on corsets and bottoms. Fashion icons Beyonce and Katy Perry wore them at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Beyonce went for a sexy red bodysuit, while Katy Perry wore a pair of tights with a printed image of garters.

The market for garters seems to be increasing with the rising population of printed tights and thigh- high stockings. Recent designs are making the possibilities endless, leading to the assumption that garters are going to stay around for quite some time.

Victoria's Secret, here we come!
Garter belts and other racy hosiery are enjoying a boost in sales thanks, British department store Debenhams says, to warm weather and celebrity trendsetters, the Daily Mail reports.

Katy Perry will take those flowers anytime, guys.
"The unpredictable spring and summer weather as well as a growing number of celebrities showcasing their stockings on stage and at star-studded events may be behind the trend," Debenhams spokeswoman Ruth Attridge told the paper.
"We've had to change our buying patterns to accommodate customer demand."
As we previously reported, stars like Perry, Lily Allen and Taylor Momsen have been seen out and about with exposed garters, while pop diva Kylie Minogue also recently rocked the sexy boudoir belt.

Looks like their "hard work" paid off -- Debenhams claims that their most popular style -- a black garter with sequins, embroidery and bows -- has seen a 238 percent sales increase in the last month, according to the paper.
Of course, one celeb by the name of Mother Nature may also be playing a part.
"Our British summer has started in the traditional way with frequent spells of sun and rain in the same day, leaving British women up in air about what to wear," explains Attridge.
"Stockings and suspenders [Brit terminology for garters], just like leggings, have become the popular alternative to tights.

"They provide coverage for legs on an unexpectedly chilly day, but at the same time are cooler than tights and far more comfortable to wear in over-heated City offices."
And did we mention that they make a great hiding spot for your dollar bills!
So go on and flash those thighs, ladies. But maybe lay off the minis for a while, yeah?
